Something that still haunts her and makes her think of him, whether as a threat or as a person she left or could not wait for. She may feel guilt but it may be at her own actions. Guilt of feeling emotion for a man who did not treat her the way she wanted to be treated. When Mrs. Drover is depict in her house, a house boarded-up and damaged by war, its painting for the reader an image of her life as affected by her long-lost fianc like her house, shes damaged though emotionally, and boarded up and abandoned. If one were to see the story this way, we could also see her in the house presently to clean out the remnants of her feelings for her fiance, or to begin the final battle to get him out of her mind.
